1. Understanding
An argumentative text is a piece of writing that proves the truth of an opinion with data or facts as reasons/evidence.
Usually the argumentative text is the basis for the debate text. The reason is, this type of text presents a form of rhetoric that influences other people's attitudes or opinions.
2. Purpose of Argumentation Text
An argumentative text has the aim of convincing readers to accept, take, or be influenced by the content or statements in the argumentative text.Argumentative texts also usually have the aim of proving a truth which is equipped with data or facts as a reason or justification for the reader's opinion.The argumentative text is non-fiction so that what is conveyed is not only logical but also uses standard and unambiguous language.The sentences contained in the argumentative text are in the form of a single sentence which aims to prove a truth so that it can convince the reader of that truth.Even though it is convincing to the reader, an argumentative text does not mean inviting other people to follow the opinion in the text.
3.Argumentation Text Structure
A. Introduction; Aims to attract the reader's attention, focus the reader's attention on the argument that will be presented, or show the basics of why the argument is put forward.
B. Body of Argument; Aimed at proving the truth conveyed in the argument. The truth presented in the body of the argument must be analyzed, structured and presented through observation, experimentation, fact compilation and logical thinking.
C. Conclusion or Summary; Aims to prove to the reader that the truth conveyed through the reasoning process can indeed be accepted as logical.
4. Characteristics of Argumentation Text
A. The content of the argumentative text provides an explanation of the ideas, opinions or beliefs written by the author.
Argumentative texts require facts that are accompanied by valid data.
B. Argumentative text contains text that provides opinions, but is also accompanied by clear data. The data contained in argumentative texts is usually in the form of numbers, maps, graphs, or pictures.
C. In creating an argumentative text, a source or synthesis is needed, which means a new summary of what is needed in a text.
Argumentative texts must also be sourced from experience, research results, and validated reading materials.
D. The analysis carried out or contained in the argumentative text is carried out by distinguishing or separating and classifying things. Then, the results of the analysis that have been found can be summarized and compiled into a new article according to the topic of discussion. Synthesis here must be carried out objectively and critically.
E. Argumentative texts usually end by writing a conclusion and closing sentence which are used to strengthen the argument.
5. Steps to Compose Argumentative Text
A. Determine the topic or theme that will be discussed in an argumentative text.
B. Determine the purpose of writing, to convince or seek support.
C. Collecting various data that is used as evidence in writing.
D. Choose the type of development pattern for each paragraph in the writing.
E. Make a paragraph outline, consisting of the main idea and supporting ideas.
F. Complete and develop paragraphs into a complete series.
